Sewing It Alone

I love to sew, but I also love art history and politics. Over the past few months, I’ve had fun fabricating potholders, bibs (for querulous adults) and wall hangings inspired by famous artists of the 20th century, contemporary buzzwords from the news, and lost-and-found jewelry. I like to straddle the Great Gap that separates crafts like sewing, embroidery, quilting and weaving from fine art painting.

All works are made of fabrics and notions collected by Margere Bies, my mother, who taught me how to sew and who will be 98 this week. Most are from 2012.

Upcoming show at the Common Wealth Gallery, Madison WI, Sept 15 - 21. Click link above for more info!
